Oxalis spiralis vulcanicola 'Sunset Velvet'

Native to South and Central America. This plant is known for its array of autumnal coloured leaves in oranges and coppers which can fade to lime green in summer. This cascading variety of Oxalis has three lobed velvety leaves which are light sensitive, meaning that the leaves will open in the morning and close at night. In summer they can produce small yellow flowers. Belongs to the Oxalidaceae family.

Difficulty: This plant has an easy rating

Light requirements: Oxalis need bright but indirect light. Direct sun will scorch the leaves!

Watering: Water Oxalis when the top 1-2 inches of the soil are dry. Water from Spring-Autumn but reduce gradually in Autumn and keep the soil completely in winter as the plant falls dormant. Humidity: Oxalis will thrive in higher humidity levels so consider a humidifier or frequent misting especially throughout the summer. It will survive in lower to medium humidity but will benefit form the higher!

Toxicity: Highly toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Caution is advised

Feeding: Use a liquid fertiliser every 3-4 weeks in the growing season and stop in winter

Repotting: Roughly every 1-2 years or when the plant seems root bound or shows signs of stunted growth
