Jewel orchid varieties

These jewel orchids are part of a variety of terrestrial (ground) growing plants, originating from South-East Asia. They grow underneath forest canopy, on the jungle floor, in high humidity, staying moist for extended periods of time. Jewel orchids are unlike regular orchids, and are grown for their velvety foliage that has stunning shimmery detail. Not commonly found in plant shops, they make great houseplants and are also perfect for closed terrariums. These specimens have been grown in their preferred substrate, sphagnum moss, but they can also be grown in houseplant soil.

Care Difficulty: This plant has moderate care needs.

Light requirements: Likes a bright location, out of direct sun as this will burn the leaves.

Watering: Water thoroughly once the top of your growing medium feels dry. This plant does not like overwatering so make sure the soil has sufficient drainage and that the pot has drainage holes. Will prefer rainwater or water thats been sitting out for 24 hours as these plants don't like the harsh chemicals in tap water.

Humidity: Prefers a humid environment, keep in the bathroom or kitchen where humidity is higher or make sure to mist the area surrounding the foliage regularly but be careful as this can cause fungal infections. Low humidity can cause browning tips. They also make a great addition to terrariums.

Toxicity: Non toxic to humans and pets.

Feeding: Likes to be fed once a month during the growing season (spring-summer) and not at all during winter. Try using an orchid feed.

Repotting: Repot every year to a pot one size up or when excessively root bound. These specimens have been grown in their preferred substrate, sphagnum moss, but they can also be grown in houseplant soil.
