Pot Diameter

A fast grower with relatively easy care, the Gynura aurantiaca is a popular and colourful houseplant. The deep green foliage is covered with shiny purple hairs. Native to Java, the purple velvet plant is one of over 100 species and is part of the larger Daisy family.

The species was first documented in 1838 by Augustin Pyrame de Candolle, a Swiss plant biologist. ‘Aurantiaca’ refers to the warm tone of the flowers it produces once in its lifetime and means ‘orange’ in Latin.

RATING: Moderately easy to care for. Look after your Gynura aurantiaca with ease and enjoy its deep green fuzzy leaves with almost neon purple fuzzy undersides and stems.

LOVES: Velvet plants enjoy moderate to bright indirect sunlight. They also love high humidity, but avoid directly spraying the leaves and avoid getting them wet when watering as the fuzzy texture traps water which can lead to waterlogging and rot.

HATES: Being overwatered - allow at least the top inch to dry out before watering your Gynura aurantiaca again.

    Overview

A fast grower with relatively easy care, the Gynura aurantiaca is a popular and colourful houseplant. The deep green foliage is covered with shiny purple hairs. Native to Java, the purple velvet plant is one of over 100 species and is part of the larger Daisy family.

    Quick Care Guide

Care Difficulty: This plant has simple care needs.

Light requirements: The Gynura aurantiaca requires bright, indirect light to thrive. Keep away from direct sunlight as this can scorch the leaves. The amount of light your velvet plant is getting will also determine how much water it requires. The more light your Gynura receives the more water it will need, and the less light, the drier it should be kept.

Watering: Water Gynura aurantiaca when the top third of the soil feels dry, reducing this in the colder months. Do not let this plant have prolonged periods of drought as this will cause the leaves to crisp and eventually die. However sitting for prolonged periods in water can cause root rot, so make sure your pot has drainage holes.

Humidity: Can do well in average household humidity. Grouping humidity-loving plants together can help increase humidity in the locality, as can placing pots on a wet pebble tray. Humidifiers are also beneficial to increase humidity.

Toxicity: Non-toxic to pets & humans.

Feeding: Can be fed in the growing season during spring and summer, but refrain from feeding in winter.

Repotting: Repot Gynura aurantiaca once it has become rootbound, this is generally done during spring. Use a pot that is only one size bigger than its original to avoid causing transplant shock.
