Caryota mitis (Fishtail Palm)

The Caryota mitis is nicknames the fishtail palm due to its large leaves that fan out and resemble the tail of a fish. A true statement plant with a deep green colour these can grow up to 2m in our house. They are native to Asia and Australia. 

Care Difficulty: Super easy to care for and can grow well in a variety of conditions.

Light requirements: Prefers bright but indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight will burn the leaves. Can tolerate lower light conditions.

Watering: Water thoroughly and allow top third of soil to dry out between waterings, do not let this plant completely dry out. Prone to root rot so make sure the soil isn't waterlogged.

Humidity: Loves humidity. Grouping humidity-loving plants together can help, as can placing pots of a wet pebble tray. You can mist the area around the foliage although this will only increase humidity temporarily. Humidifiers are also beneficial to increase humidity. Brown tips are a sign it needs more humidity.

Toxicity: Toxic to humans and pets

Feeding: Enjoys a feed around once a month in spring and summer but not during the winter

Repotting: Check to see if the plant is root bound, look for roots coming out the bottom of the pot!
