Lettuce on a stick is the common name for the Brighamia insignis. This plant is a member of the larger bellflower family and is one of many Hawaiian lobeliads. This peculiar but wonderful plant has a thick stem, topped by clustered leaves, and can produce flowers. Although also known as a Hawaiian Palm, this plant is not a palm at all! The thick stem stores water for the plant, so ensure you all the plant to dry out before re-watering. Unfortunately this plant in now endangered in its native habitat due to the extinction of Hawaiian hawk moths, but can be kept as a houseplant instead as it is now grown in cultivation.

RATING- Easy/Moderate

LOVES- Bright, indirect light. Warm temperatures.

HATES- Overwatering, let at least half of the soil dry out before watering again.

TOXICITY RATING- Non-toxic to cats and dogs.

    Care Difficulty: Easy to care for plant.

    Light requirements: Bright indirect sunlight, can tolerate some early morning and evening sunlight. Direct sunlight can cause the leaves to burn.

    Watering: Water thoroughly but allow this plant to dry out mostly between waterings.

    Humidity: Can do well in normal household conditions but will enjoy some extra humidity.

    Toxicity: Non toxic to humans and pets

    Feeding: Enjoys being fed during Spring- Summer growth period every 2 to 4 weeks. Always follow the instructions on your feed of choice.

    Repotting: Repot once every 2-3 years -check to see if the roots are coming out the bottom of the pot!

    FREE UK DELIVERY ON ALL ORDERS OVER £50.

    Free local delivery to Brighton & Hove homes and surrounding areas is available.

    UK Nationwide delivery fees (for total orders under £50):

    • £4 for 48-hour tracked delivery via Royal Mail
    • £6.95 tracked next-day working day delivery with UPS (order must be received before 2pm to guarantee next-day delivery).

    These charges cover the whole order, regardless of how many items. Please email us if you would like the option to upgrade your shipping for faster delivery.

    Refunds & returns

    Refunds are available for any plant or product with an obvious fault. The request must be made within 7 days of delivery via email or by phone.

    Any products damaged in transit will require photos to be submitted via email. If we think they are salvageable we will provide you with return labels. If they are not we will provide a full refund, but we require the complaint to be submitted within 7 days of receiving the plant.

    Any return of plants within 7 days for any other reason will require the customer to pay for that return postage. Full details can be found here on our Refunds Policy page.
