Aphelandra squarrosa 'Botanica' (Zebra plant)

This stunning tropical plant originates from Brazil. From late Summer to early Autumn this plant produces a very large bright yellow flower! The foliage is a real talking point- deeply crinkled leaves with bright white stripes on green- giving the plant its nickname 'Zebra plant'.

Care Difficulty: Moderate care needs.

Light requirements: Prefer bright indirect light as they are used to growing under the canopy of trees. Direct sunlight can cause the leaves to burn.

Watering: Water thoroughly using lukewarm water but allow top 2 inches to dry out between waterings. Soil needs to be moist not soggy. To much water can cause leaves to wilt.

Humidity: Loves humidity. Grouping humidity-loving plants together can help, as can placing pots of a wet pebble tray. You can mist the area around the foliage although this will only increase humidity temporarily. Be cautious to not mist excessively as this can lead to fungal issues. Humidifiers are also beneficial to increase humidity.

Toxicity: Non toxic to humans and pets

Feeding: Enjoys being fed during Spring- Summer while flowering every 1 to 2 weeks. Always follow the instructions on your feed of choice.

Repotting: Repot around once every 1 to 2 years -check to see if the roots are coming out the bottom of the pot!
